Who would be interested in such a CD? A CD could indeed be
created as a browser based local copy with a java search
engine for searching the text by word combinations ... i.e.
"brake+hose". Or as it would be local files, one could just
use "grep" to search the text itself if one was so inclined.
Naturally, the ads would be stripped out, but existing flaming
posts or other content wouldn't be filtered and would be
associated with the person's name as posted. In addition to
the date index, it would seem logical to also include an
"author index" as well as "thread" index, but as with the
existing on-line version, the thread index would be only as
useful as the existing "garbage-in garbage-out" content of the
subject line(s). Off hand, I'd say the CD would be pretty
empty (looks to be about 25 meg or less even with all the html
overhead for messages from Dec 14, 1998 through Jan 2, 2002).
Would $15/cd be fair for the reformatting effort and
shipping/handling of this snapshot of history with local
access ability which is immediately obsolete as it is only a
snapshot in time? Would people desire to browse Amphipoda's
ramblings mixed in with dated posts such as "are there any
rooms left for 2000" or more relevant "U-Joint" or
"backup-bilge pump" comments at their leisure off-line? Are
there copyright problems ? ... I can't imagine repackaging
public domain comments would be a problem, but are there
issues here? If the club is only interested in a one-time
backup, then that might lead one in another direction and Mike
Israel might already have another solution?
Just thinking about the thought
