Now that I have my engine out of the Amphicar, I decided to pull the trans to rebuild it. My question is, can the engine and trans go back in as a unit?

Tim,

As a unit is the best way to put it back in...It is easier to put the transmission on the motor out of the car...I put a 1 X 6 old slightly oiled oak(hardwood)board on the flat area under the transmission and as you hoistmotor and tranny almost vertical you can slowly angle it into the car using the board as a sliding guide and when you get the transmission near the rear mounts go around inside the car and lift up the back of transby hand and place the 2 tranny bolts in place (when doing this you may have to lower hoist a little to line things up)... Now remove the board and lower engine totally on motor mount... I did this 3 times by myselfand it was flawless every time. Good point, Leave transmissionand motor empty of oilthen fill both when in car...

Good luck,

Using a clutch alignment tool will assure that all is lined up
correctly and hopefully eliminate clutch shutter. Putting the engine
and tranny together before installing is the way to go.

Tim,

The clutch disk alignment tool has EVERYTHING to do with getting the
engine and tranny together and NOTHING to do with clutch chatter.
