Fw: [AMC_Eagle] Ebay
I recently joined the yahoo AMC Eagle group just to check it out since I've
owned many AMC's in the past including a few very good Eagle Wagons. The
posting below came in and I thought some of you might find in interesting. Is
this guy adventurous or is he showing a serious lack of judgment????

Well, in the future I'll try for closer Eagles I think.
I wen to tpick it up, driving nonstop the trip took 30 hours. Among other
things a stray dog we picked up puked on me, etc... it was fun. Anyway I had
forgotten the address and phone number of the guy in Oregon who had the car,
oops.
Anyway I finally ofund the street and got the Eagle. The exterior was perfect,
but the interior, headliner, armrests seats, etc were all covered with mold. It
ran fine and the transmission wasn't in too bad shape. The car would clearly
make it to Chicago OK... I thought...
We started home via 90 through montana, which was great until we got to wyoming.
The roads were 100% covered with ice, and we discovered the 4wd wasnt working.
My friend Kelly, who was assisting with the driving (i brought 3 friends to make
the 60 hours easier), was in control of the Eagle and I was driving the 98 New
Beetle a few hours later... uphill on ice, a check of my rear view mirror was
just in time to see Kelly fly to the left, and then back across the lanes into
the guard rail. Damage to the Eagle was minimal; hit the rail head on and Eagle
bumpers are pretty tough it seems. Jimmy was also in the car, seatbeltless and
he busted himself up a bit; shattered the rear view mirror with his ear.
Anyway we get going again, with a more experienced driver on the rear-wheel
drive Eagle. Wyoming is relentless, we are literally the only traffic on 90 at
2am or so. I've never seen roads so bad, we're moving at 30mph. Finally I stop
at the side of the road, to wait for Jimmy to catch up in the Eagle so I can ask
if we should find another route since this may be too dangerous... As Jimmy
tries to stop the Eagle spins and flies 30 feet off the road into a ditch,
where, 4wd-less, it becomes stuck. Every gas station and truck stop is closed,
and we end up having to drive 70 miles to the nearest Walmart for a tow cable
and salt. Several hours later, the BEETLE drags the Eagle out of the ditch.
We continue, this time taking 25 to 80 instead of risking the rest of 90. It's
no better, rather, it worse. We can't move the Eagle any faster than 10mph or
so. Reverse and Drive also were broken after the spills, only '1' and '2' work
now. Eventually we try deflating the tires for traction; the road is so
slippery a running start on foot will let you slide for no less than 45 feet.
The deflated tires only worsen the issue. rt 25 is looming ahead, it becomes
clear we will never get the Eagle back in good time.
We are at this point, out of money, time and options. We're already a day late,
and theres no way we can take the time for a tow or crawling the whole way...
Defeated, we maneuver to the top of a large hill, shift the Eagle into neutral
and Heave Ho!! She rolls for a few hundred feet and comes to rest in the
median... the saddest thing I ever saw. If anyone wants an Eagle, theres one
in the Southbound median of I25 in Wyoming; keys and title in the car.
::cry:: God is against me having an Eagle, this is the second one that failed
to make it home.
