I tried to buy that DUKW. It was listed last week, and I was high bidder for several days. Then at the end three bidders with no feedback pushed the bid way up and then it was over, I lost out. Turns out the three bidders were Russian, and the first two planned on crapping out so the third one could get it for less. They all three were disqualified and instead of selling the truck to me(I had met reserve) the guy relisted it.

The truck is actually in pretty good shape considering it's 65 years old. This one is one of a pair owned by a fire department, used for water rescues on some big lake. If you've never been on a DUKW ride, it is as thrilling and more splashing into the water in something that big, as it is in an Amphicar. And they are a hoot to steer in the water.

I'd bid again but some of my money has been spent on other projects, and I'm not in a hurry to be shut out again. In my opinion the truck is worth every bit of the 18500 the guy is asking, but not much more, especially when it will cost on the north side of 2K to have it shipped anywhere.

Hello,

Wow, another guys (evidently a rich guys) attempt to build a boat/car. In spite of what looks like amazing workmanship and almost unbelievable expense, this thing doesn't work at all! He makes no claim for it either working well as a car or a boat. At over 700 horsepower and he can't even get it to plane. Also, with no ground clearance, there's no way it could come out at a standard boat ramp. How bizarre. These new attempts at improved amphibious cars make the Amphicar look better and better.

Wow. Just wow. Was this the guy that made the floating tanker truck a few years back?

Yes, that was a previous project by Dobbertin; his "Surface Voyager."
Actually, I kind of like that converted milk trailer better than his new hot
rod. The Voyager had a certain funky and odd appeal that fits my
preferences; after all, if I wanted to go fast on the water, I would get a
hydroplane rather than an Amphi.

BTW, I bet those people who live along the long, narrow lake must really
love his >500 HP test runs! <g> Dobbertin doesn't sound like a fanatic, but
he has certainly put his priorities backward, going for a flashy, finished
look even before he proves his weight/balance/trim/hydrodynamics issues. And
he sure has problems, what with clearance, prop efficiency, center of
gravity/flotation, etc. Also, all the videos I could find concentrate on
water tests; I didn't find anything about how this handles on land.

OTOH, he's a dreamer, and that can make for a lot of fun for everyone.

I don't recall a floating Tanker Truck, but there was the fellow who made a
floating yellow Isuzu ( I believe it was an Isuzu. I have pictures of it
somewhere, but am saying it was an Isuzu based on my recollection ) He was
really upset when he wasn't allowed to have it photographed along with
the field of Amphicars in Celina. His craft did work ( sort of ! ) but was
anything but well engineered. Subsequently he make a floating school bus I
think he only had pictures of that, or maybe never actually made one into an
Amphibian. He was trying to persuade people that it was capable of ocean
voyages and was seeking interested participants. I, having circled the world
in a sailboat, know what the ocean has to offer. He was not pleased with
my statements of his craft's impractability and short comings. He also was
arrested on one occasion for drunken boating in his Isuzu I believe which
the newspapers of course made into a news item.

There is the Terra Wind - a million dollar motor home which evidently does
work reasonably well and most of you have probably seen pictures or a video
clip of it. It has sponsons on each side that fold down to provide
stability. I expect this is available to see on the internet. They supposedly
planned on starting to produce them. Maybe the price and the economy and the
lack of interested buyers quashed this idea because I have not heard any more
of it in some time. I am quite happy with my 1967 "Split Personality"
in Florida.

Hi Vic,

I think we've digressed from the DUKW thread, but regarding the orbiter ... see Surface Orbiter

www.dobbertinhydrocar.com/Dobbertin Surface Orbiter.html

Also, the "Isuzu" you refer to I believe was the "Amphi Geo". I was at Celina that year, but darned if I can remember what year it was so I can call up a picture of it. Remember how fast the front wheels spun in the water? As I recall, the single rear prop spun off from the main drive ... well sort of. He had a chain drive (single roller I believe) from the rear mounted engine to a diff to send power to the front wheels and rear prop. Where the engine would have been in the front of the Geo was empty, but not very well sealed. But it did float and manage its way under the hot hole bridge...
