drive shaft

Hugh refers to the drive component that powers the rear wheels as a drive
shaft. From my experience with independent rear suspension, I always thought
that this part would be called a half-shaft. This is petty, but which is
correct?

Also, I recently obtained, in one piece, the entire front suspension unit
sans the steering box and steering shaft. Does anyone need anything?

I guess that there's a lot of auto terminology that doesn't make a lot of sense.
I mean, take quarter-panels. Exactly what are they 1/4 of? Or what's the dash in
dashboard?

Those parts have been called "half-shafts", but then, they look pretty complete
to me. I mean, just because there's a left one and a right one, it doesn't make
each one a "half." You wouldn't call your left rear wheel a "half-wheel", would
you?

There, is that perfectly clear?
