Hi Folks:
For years and years, even way before I ever owned an Amphicar, I have
driven past a lake used by the Orange County Water District for
collecting winter ground water runoff from the nearby Santa Ana River
here in Southern California, located near the intersection of the 55
and 91 freeways.
Several times recently I have remarked to my daughter, "Wouldn't it
be cool if I could take the Amphicar in that lake."
But, alas, it is geared for fishermen as they stock the lake and let
people fish from the shoreline.
As a lark, I drove up to the front gate today in my "regular" car,
whipped out a photo of my Amphicar doing its thing, and asked them if
I could bring it to this lake sometime.
"Sure," said the ranger, "we had a blue and red one in here about
three weeks ago."
I was dumbfounded. As you all may know, lakes are a very scarce
commodity here in desert-like Southern California, and here is one
that I did not know I had access to, and it is merely THREE miles
from my house!!
To make things more unreal, he pointed out that I would also be
welcome at the Anaheim Lake, which is another man-made lake just two
miles farther down the road.
As you may have guessed, I went right home, changed cars, and drove
back to the Santa Ana River Lakes within the hour for my first dip in
this lake. Cool. They did not even charge me a launch fee!
Life is good!
PS Who were those other two Amphicars that were floating in this lake
three weeks ago, and why didn't you contact me???????
