The clutch and pressure plates seem to be pretty good. The throw out
bearings that are available Iam not happy with and put back in an old
used one. Is it perhaps late night Celina events that smoked your
clutch? Later Dave

that have let loose. Check motor mounts too. Defenitley use amsoil. I
must have been good this past year. Margie got me seat belts and the

In all of the recent clutch talk, no one has mentioned the fact that
you cannot have end play in your crankshaft and have a smooth clutch.
This is a problem that will be hard to check for and even harder to
repair so I don't wish it on anyone.

As I am sure most of you know that my clutch let go in Celina before the
parade on Saturday. It turns out that one of the three nuts on the pressure
plate
that load the three fingers had loosed up and the metal disc was then
cocked
on an angle and that is why the clutch would not release.

Rick Lloyde also lost power to the wheels just at the start of the parade.

Quick check told him something must have went in his clutch. Every thing
seemed to move in and out but only a moan sound in a 4 forward and reverse
gears so left his car and off to catch up in my car.
He pushed it into the Photo shot.\it is the blue one in middle front row.
As our swim in was only 2 weeks later he got right into it when he got home.
Took out clutch and found nothing wrong with it so suspected trans and took
it out and brought up to me. I took it apart and found nothing wrong with it
either. Called him back and said it must be the clutch...Well it
wasn't...Turns out it was the guide pin..20-25 in parts book had disiagrated
which of coarse let the axle spin but not the wheel. If we had figured that
out at the show we could have been going in a hour or so.

Also if anyone is installing a clutch mare sure you true it before putting
engine in car for a smooth releasing unit.I have a copy of Tommy,s
suggestion for curing shudder.

There is no "truing up" adjustments necessary (or possible) if you
convert your Amphicar to my high performance clutch system. Diaphram
clutches don't have adjustments.

Yes indeed, John's "High Performance Clutch System" is the absolutely THE clutch
I'LL be going with when the time comes...By the way, his other Amphi offering,
the late-model drain plug ain't too shabby either. See:

Re clutch

Last year at Celina
the Canadian car at the center of the main picture had to be pushed into
place.
props spin but no go at wheels... must be clutch.
no, trany gear,,, no
It was the pin that holds the 5 stud hub on on the outer axles so
for a $1.00 a whole weekend can be ruined.
easy to check. put in gear and look at axles.

Even Hught phoned today to wish me well;
Thanks to everone who called and emailed

I have My first Friese clutch here. The release bearing is a piece of
art that is heavy duty. But asking what if it gets wet is a fair
question. Even "dry" cars get wet. It looks like there are now a lot of
these systems out there and have passed the test of time. Later Dave the

I have had the bearing type (rather than the carbon type) throwout
bearing in my car for 5700+ miles (250 hours in the water) w/o
problems. My car gets WET! Not from leaks, but from fast entries and
bombing through waves.

I installed John's very 1st system in a customer's car and it did
fit perfectly. I am sure nothing but improvements have been made in
the almost 3 years since then.

My feeling is that much of clutch problems are because of crummy
rebuilders. I have seen spray paint rebuilds, welded disk plates, broken
springs, wierd lining materials. I used Best Built but last order was
not up to usual quality. I sent a set to Fort Wayne clutch and it was
perfect. Also if You do not alighn clutch with tool You can cause clutch
chatter due to jamming trans in a hole that is not lined up. Always
prefit disk to input shaft. Make sure it slides easily. Also after
pressure plate is bolted down check to make sure ring that release
bearing rides on is level. The Fort Wayne clutch was properly built and
needed no adjustment. Others have had to be adjusted I assume to
compensate for unmatched springs. But it does not matter whos clutch You
use ,if You are the type that revs up the engine and rides the clutch up
a hill or loading trailer it will eventually chatter. I have installed a
few of Johns clutches and so far no one has complained . They are smooth
as others have said. But I normally install the stock unit, and by being
careful chatter has not been an issue. Later Dave the "goin' green Wave

Hi Dave,

You're right about crummy clutch rebuilders. I ran into two of them,
that had been in business for years, that didn't know what "marcel" in
a clutch disk is and when they rebuilt the disks they didn't use
shoulder rivets. This kills the marcel and without marcel the disk
will almost certainly chatter badly. I know about Fort Wayne clutch
and if I HAD to use the old fashioned clutch system, I would
definitely deal only with them. The old clutch simply can't hold the
power of a 1500 engine and is marginal with a 1300 engine too. Since
changing a clutch is such a big job, it's comforting to know that my
clutch system is of the modern design, is reliable and will work with
any Triumph engine I put in the car. Heck, it's just "idling" along
when running with the original 1147 engine.

Re: Re: Clutch

FWIW, brand new clutch plates are available for the 1147. I had a
rebuilt plate that broke 3 months after I installed it (chattered the
whole time it was in the car). Bought a new plate at
www.sportscarwarehouse.com, and it has been trouble free for 5 years.

Since they are local in town, I am sure I took the old plate down and
showed it to them, and told them it was off of an 1147. Byron is the guy
to talk to there, and he knows about my Amphi, so if you tell him 1147
Amphicar, he will be able to take care of you.
