Clock and Glove Box Door Needed

Hi John:
I'll take a look and see if I'm got a decent clock. If not I have a new one
which I plan to put into my blue car soon and maybe the one from it will do
well for you. I know they are hard to find and heard Gordon was out of
them. He must be or you would have ordered one. Whats wrong with your
glove box door? Do you need it for the white car?
Thanks,Mike

John,

I have an extra glove box door. The only clock I have comes with a
car. :) Let me know if you're interested.

Hi Mike,
The previous owner of my white car put a tachometer where the clock
used to be and cut a hole in the glove box door for some non Amphicar
clock. Although that clock works, it's not original and I don't like
it stuck into the glove box either. The original clock was no longer
around so I'm looking for a correct unit. I just picked up a non
working Amphi clock from another owner and will send it to an
instrument rebuilder to see if he can fix it or retrofit it with a
quartz movement. The clock in the red car has bad dial paint and I'm
looking to improve that situation too.
On another front, I just sent the brake parts, from the white car, off
to White Post for rebuilding and during the process found that the
boots on both rear axles are broken. I also see that at least one of
the inner universal joints is shot too. I know Gordon sells the boot
material but haven't checked with him about the universals. Do you
know anything about replacing those universals?
Thanks,
John Friese

Re: Re: Clock and Glove Box Door Needed

John,
Regarding the u-joints. I had a bad one also and
searched high and low for a replacement and asked
everyone including Gordons. Gordons does not supply
them anymore. I've even got access to good mechanics
with connections at the General Motors Proving Grounds
and had no luck finding an exact match after searching
every parts book we could find. We found one that
appeared to be exact but when installing found that it
was just a tiny bit too long. The cap diameters were
correct though so here's what we did. We centered the
joint in the yoke, got four washers about the same
size as the caps, then put a small weld on the end of
each washer to hold in place instead of the original
clips. The other drawback is that the joint does not
come with a grease fitting so we removed the caps and
filled with Amsoil before installing but since it
can't be greased it will probably need to be replaced
in a few years. I'll give you the part number and
you'll have to decide whether its worth the effort or
whether you're better off buying a new axle from
Gordons. The u-joint is $25-30 and the axle boot is
$15-20. I think the new axle is about $400. The
u-joint is available from Napa and their part number
is "451". If you don't have a Napa parts store near
you, you can order and have it shipped via
Napaonline.com. Hope this helps.

I believe it's considered "bad form" to promote your own sales on ebay -
even if they include an amphicar clock...... so I wont !

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the info. I decided to go with the big dollar "later"
shafts from Hugh and hope that this will be the only time I'll have
to do it.
Thanks,

Hello David,
Thanks for the clever lead. I bought one clock and have a lead on
another. If that second clock falls through (I should know in a couple
of days) I'll give a bid to that clock of yours.
Thanks,
John Friese
