Cleats on an Amphi???

I'm looking for ideas on tieing an Amphi to a dock. I'm thinking about
installing a flush mount hook that when not in use is fliped over and
out of site. Mabey one it the base of the windshield and another at the
back where the rear fin starts. Anyone have any other ideas. I'm not
sure if I want to cut a hole in my Amphi just to tie it to a dock.

Craig,

If you need to tie it to the dock, get a couple of good quality
fenders to keep the dock side from damaging the body. Then get a
couple of standard cleats that will mount with screws or bolts. That
way the holes will be mimimal. I have seen the cleats mounted exactly
where you mentioned, in fact my parts car has 2 there already.

Nice looking car BTW!

I wouldn't punch any holes in the car. Instead try tying off from the
toe hook, the front bumper brackets and the rear bumper bracket. Hugh
also mentioned to me using the steering wheel as a point but I wasn't
too happy with that myself. It would be difficult to impossible to
come up with some cleat that would have as strong a mount as these
points and your not damaging the appearance that way.

RE: Re: Cleats on an Amphi???

I would not recommend tying an Amphicar to a dock. My car was damaged
when this was done years before I bought it.

A previous owner of my car had two cleats installed, one on the front
left fender near the windshield, and the other mounted on the rear hood
near its front hinge. The cleats were fine and he used backing plates,
but the side of the car suffered when waves pushed against the car and
into the dock. It looked as if he used three rubber boating fenders,
because I had three large dents along the side of the car, shallow but
very large and ugly.

I never tried docking it myself but I could tell that somewhere in its
history it was damaged doing this.

It took quite a bit of time to work the dents out during the
restoration. I took off the cleats and welded up the mounting holes so I
wouldn't be tempted to use them.

However, I could see the use for a cleat that's accessible to the driver
for use with an anchor. Some of the guys up here in the Seattle area tie
their anchor line to a door handle, but I can't bring myself to do it.
Whatever you decide, just make sure the line doesn't chafe the paint!
