Chassis Dimension Question

Here's a question for someone who has an Amphi that never had any rear axle
tunnel damage and has the transmission pulled from their car.

What is the distance between the inside ends of the two rear axle tunnel
shafts?

Thanks,

Ed, I did not measure the distance but as I recall, it wasn't more than about 2 to 2.5 inches.

Larry:

Yes, that's about the right distance. However, I have one tunnel that was
chewed by a failing U-joint, and I have bought a replacement "inside end"
from Chris Lariviere. However, before I start welding, I would like to know
the distance a bit more accurately. It's tempting to measure my left tunnel
and say it's the same as the right, but that might be a false assumption. It
might also be a bad assumption to think that the transmission is
symmetrical, that is, the left flange sticks out the same as the right
flange from the vehicle centerline.

I had searched the archives, but found no official dimension for this. Thus,
the best thing is to check with real examples.

Ed, I wish I could help you but my transmission and engine are on the floor now. But I think you are right, I seem to recall a slight bit of difference between the sides. The reason I noticed anything was that I had envisioned a space large enough to compress the tunnel boot and sliding it out of place with the transmission still in the car. I was surprised at the small area that wouldn't allow me to do that. I have to weld several small holes on the bottom of the tunnels where the boot sits as*water sat and rusted through. This is my first total renovation and I am really making a list of things to take apart and clean and lube to winterize.

Hi Ed,

I have an early car, 100299, apart. The tunnels measure 4.5 inches
OD. Both left and right tunnels are symmetrical with respect to the
distance they protrude from the vertical surface on which they're
welded. They protrude almost precisely 10 inches, perhaps a sixteenth
over. Distance between them measures exactly 13 inches. Hope this
helps.
