Celina timeline

Bill, I'm trying to sort out flight details for Celina, I've wanted to go to New
Zealand for ages so I'm trying to include Celina as a stop-off on a round the
world trip ! I'll try to get to Detroit rather than Chicago this time, plan is
to arrive Thursday and get to Celina same day (but evening). I know things are
pretty much wound up by Sunday so could leave the US as early as Monday but
what's the deal with put-in bay ? I remember going past the signs on the way to
Detroit last time, I think Syx bloke does something there ? Do you know what is
planned to happen - how many people etc - how long...

Thanks

David,

Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to last year's gathering up there in
Put-in-Bay, but I can offer you my impressions from two years ago. Put-in-Bay
on Bass Island, a couple of hours drive and an hour's ferry ride north of
Celina, is a sort of 1910-20s lakeside U.S. Midwestern answer to your
great-grandparents' English Blackpool-style resort town...just on a smaller
scale, and obviously with better food. Nowadays it has found a new life over
the weekends as a sort of university students' retreat and open air vomitorium
(for representative aftermath photos of this phenomenon, please refer to
http://zongrila.com/9reasons.htm ). Happily, Billy Syx's gathering there right
after the big weekend in Celina takes place after most of the chundering herds
have forced down their aspirin mega-doses and limped back to their dorms and
breeding grounds on the mainland.

Actually, Put-in-Bay is a quirkily pleasant and quaint relic adrift in our
otherwise pre-stress-concrete-and-plastic 21st Century "USA, Inc.", with lots of
old gingerbread-ornamented wooden buildings affecting the "grand hotel" style of
a bygone era. Surprisingly, the place is not expensive at all, especially for
an island that presumably needs everything shipped in. As for the boat launches
and harbor there, everything's just PERFECT for Amphicar fun, and it's all just
a couple of hundred feet from the main street.

I see that I have not yet lobbed an announcement up for the Put-in-Bay gathering
on the Club Calendar...Hell, I only just got the Celina stuff up a few days ago.
I'll have to touch base with Billy by phone to find out his plans, but you can
still check out the 2002 announcement of the Put-in-Bay gathering thanks to the
"Wayback Machine" at:

http://web.archive.org/web/20020609132824/http://www.amphicar.com/calendar.htm

The old 2002 Put-in-Bay announcement in the abovelinked page includes an equally
thrownback link for town info as well as a link for the Park Hotel, which is
where we stayed. Strangely enough, the page also still shows one of those
"countdown to Celina" gimmicks that I put on the Club website, but instead of
counting down to the event, it just continues counting the days since it began
years ago, and for all I know it may continue to do so for all eternity. To see
the current Put-in-Bay town info website, just go to: http://www.put-in-bay.com/

There's also a nice writeup on Put-in-Bay from the boater's perspective at
http://www.boatohio.com/destinations/destinations001.shtml

So, on balance I'd say that if it made little difference to the cost or
scheduling of your World Tour plans, and if you can find someone with an Amphi
to tag along with that's also taking in the post-Celina gathering at Put-in-Bay,
it might be a grand idea. If nothing else, you'll love the superb barbecue
served up on the patio of the Park Hotel in the afternoon. Try it for your
great-grandparents sake, since they missed out on it just hanging around
Blackpool like that.

~Bilgey~
