Doug,
How about some engine details, such as adjusting the valves, timing
chain replacement and distributor alignment.

Re: Re: Celina Tech Session

I won't be at Celina, but....

1. What is the gear ratio for the speedometer cable? Or, another way, what is
the cable RPM for a given road speed or rear axle RPM?
2. I have heard some comments about Amphi engines running hot. Has anyone ever
replaced the stock radiator with a thicker (more tubes) or larger radiator?
3. I have been giving some thought to neater oil changing. When I have my engine
pulled, I was thinking about installing some kind of (copper?) tubing that would
be permanently connected to the lowest part of the engine oil pan (another tube
for the trans, too). I could route these tubes up to a convenient location near
the engine valve cover, and cap them. At oil changing time, just pull a suction
on each tube, and you will get a nearly compete oil drainage (plus it will get
any sediment unlike a suction tube stuck down the dipstick hole). Maybe weird,
but what do you think? It has to be better than going in through the bilge hole!

I gave you a real response Doug! I suggested we talk about
lubrication for the chassy and wheel bearings and other secret spots.

BTW: I found another "hidden" oil spot. There is a small hole on the
back of your generator that asks for a few drops of machine oil every
now and then.

Hi-

I would like a Celina tech session on the proper removal and reinstallation
of the engine and tranny. I am really considering repairing and repainting
the sheet metal, both inside and out. I can take most of the car apart, but
the thought of removing the engine and tranny scares me. So, I hope you
pick my topic. Please, please, please.

The Amphicar Maintenance manual, Engine section, in the Members area, at the
club site, gives a step-by-step removal process. Note that this section
describes parting the land trans from the clutch, and removing the engine
without the transmissions. (There is another segment for pulling the
transmissions, involving a step-by-step of disconnecting the rear axles. I'm not
too clear on that process.)

Since pulling the engine (preferably with both trannies attached) is in my
immediate future, I would like to hear of any advice. (Now that I have reviewed
the Manual, I wonder if lifting the engine / clutch / land tranny / water
tranny, by the engine lift points, was perhaps frowned upon by the factory.
Maybe they felt that too much stress was put on the clutch housing or transaxle
case by the mass of both transmissions?)

Hi Doug, What about the proper installation of a new clutch. The correct way
to eliminate those bilgen first gear shutters. Tommy in Tampa
