Celina... Ignitions... Bilge Blowers

As usual I'm the last one on the list to get the annual Christmas gift. That's
life up here in Fairbanks. Can't wait to pop it in the machine and sit down with
some popcorn. My Amphicar is coming along well. I found allot less rust in the
rear quarters then I thought I had. Got all the trim off the back side and one
of the doors striped. I should be ready for blasting sometime next month. That's
if my better half will let me play in the garage that much. :)
On another note I pulled the ignition switch and it appears to be original. I
thought it was an aftermarket swish because some one had added a push button
starter next to it in the dash. I Ordered a key from Gordon's and with luck
should be able to test it sometime soon. Can anyone tell me what terminals
should be doing what with the key in the on and start positions? I have the
switch out and would like to test it with a test light.
And the last question... My Bilge Blower has never been hooked up. I believe it
was bypassed with the ignition push button conversion. I would like to go back
to stock and was wondering how reliable the system was. I still have all the
parts in the car but some wires have been cut and the timer tubes are missing,
any idea where to get those. I still have the push button override next to the
heater controls. Well that's about it for now.

Cold up there? It's getting pretty chilly here too. No snow yet which has
been really nice. The wiring manual should tell you what wires do what with
the ignition switch. As for a timer tube, I've got one here that I'll send
up to you. Is your address right in the club roster?

Nothing, just let me know if it works. It's off to the North Pole already

Does anyone know how long these timers work before they shut off the blower?
I've never let one time out.

Mike,

I believe most are 2 minutes and some are 30 only seconds.

Mike,
The original timer tubes ran for two minutes. A couple of years ago,
I found some 30 second tubes at a surplus place and have used them in
my cars since. I rarely even wait for the 30 seconds but it's nice to
know they will "do their thing" correctly anyway.

John, any idea where to look for some of those 30 sec tubes? I have never seen a
timer tube and don't know what to ask for when looking. Are there any numbers on
them or anything else to ask for that would help to locate some?

Craig,
The company is Amperite. I corresponded with them several weeks ago via
email. I was interested in a 10- second version of the tube. Here is what
they wrote:

There is a 10 second version of this part. The part number is 12NO10T
This is part of our G Series. The price is 107.47, plus shipping and
handling. You may order directly from us by using a Visa or MasterCard.
You
may email an order or fax an order to us at 201-864-3955 or call us at
800-752-2329.

Their website is at: http://www.amperite.com/

Good luck.

Craig,

I found mine at Surplus Sales of Nebraska but I think they're all out
of them. I was not aware that Amperite still claims to sell them. I
seem to recall looking for them and finding them no longer available.
That was about two years ago however. I'd call Amperite directly.

Yow! At that price, the push button looks better and better. Guess I

The problem is that just about absolutely nobody uses these Amperite time-delay
tubes anymore. (The tube contains a small reed switch, which is heated by a
small resistive heater coil. When the power to the coil turns on, the little
heater starts warming the reed switch. Eventually, the reed gets warm enough to
expand, clicking over-center, and activating a switch. This is very similar to
the way that a turn-signal light flasher works.) Time delays are now designed
around the 555 timer chip, which costs way under a dollar. Add a few junk-box
parts, and you have a fine electronic timer.

Many months from now, I'll design a 555 timer circuit to provide bilge blower
time delay. Sorry, but right now, I'm trying to learn how to weld without
burning myself too often.

hey 67 rust guppy
I to am restoring a 67 amphicar, except i should have called mine rust
bucket.? I had to have the
whole floor replaced including around the wheels and alot of the inside
parts.. I bought
ark welders, MIG WEIDERS, AND TOURCHES. the more you use them the better you
get at
setting them up and using them.I now do most all the welding myself.and hope
to have it running
by the summer, not completely done but moveable and all the metal work.
good luck with yours PAUL from ALBANY NY
