brake master rebuild parts

I'm looking to rebuild the brake master cylinder. Past postings don't
find any part numbers or references. Is the VW transporter a viable
alternative? Is there a Wagner part number for the parts? Any advice?

As I came to the point where I had to repair or replace my master cylinder, I
decided to rebuild it. I wanted to see the insides anyway, and I felt that I
could probably rebuild it successfully. And, in case something inside was
hopeless, or I messed something up beyond fixing, I could always go with the VW
Transporter option. So, I just bought a rebuild kit from Gord Souter. Gord's kit
has everything you need, except for the switch.

Also, you might want to get a new reservoir connector hose. This is the short
rubber hose that connects the reservoir hard-line tube to the bottom of the
reservoir. One complication is that the OD of the reservoir nipple is much
larger than the OD of the brake-line tubing. Hugh Gordon sells a little adapter
hose (it has a large ID at one end and a small ID at the other). This allows for
an easy way to fit a tube without any hassle or brake fluid leakage.

If you decide to rebuild, make sure you get the cylinder scrupulously clean. My
cylinder was incredibly gunked up, and the piston was stuck in the bore. Also
make sure that you clear BOTH holes from the cylinder bore into the reservoir
(the rear hole is obvious, but the forward hole is maybe only about 0.020"
diameter; rod it carefully with a very small drill bit or a strand of wire,
being careful to not enlarge the port).

Here's some notes from past postings about the master cylinder. One thing is;
several posts have mentioned using a VW Transporter master cylinder as a direct
Amphi replacement, but I would be more comfortable if someone who has done this
would post the actual VW (or aftermarket) part number that was successfully
used:

"The Volkswagen master cylinder works very well. I just had to cut an inch or so
off of the threaded rod that pushes into it. $28 at the local Bug Stop. I highly
recommend it over trying to rebuild the old one.
---------------------------------------------------------
Piston, part # 6-24-6 (or 6-24-6a), is marked ATZ 3.3311-2231.
---------------------------------------------------------
The Piston rear seal, part # 6-24-8 (or 6-24-8a), is marked ATZ 48.8402-2201.1
44114 6-86. Replacement part is a FAG Schafer H22330 3-12.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The stoplight switch can be replaced with a Standard Motor Products SLS33
switch. The only difference is the new part has male spade electrical terminals
instead of screw posts. Just crimp on female spade terminals on your two harness
wires and they will push on the terminals. Same switch is used on the VW 1964
1192cc Transporter and 1974 Porsche 911 2700cc Carrera. [$6.34 at

-----------------------------------------------------------
If you want a switch with the screw posts, get a Borg Warner S 891."
