Brake Linings

Hi-

It's Saturday so I haven't called, but I assume Hugh Gordon still has brake
shoes with original linings. They are expensive ($41.25 each, after core
return). White Post in Virginia does relining. What lining do they use?
Hugh also has in the catalog brake linings ($25.07 each). Is it worth
getting them and sending them and the shoes to White Post for installation.
(Attaching linings is not something I would do myself.)

Any suggestions and/or experience?

What brake linings are best for an Amphi? I see from the archives that this
subject has come up before, but I didn't see many answers.

My current linings are a woven type. They give poor braking performance for
quite a while after swimming. Do the linings that Gordon sells fade less
when wet or dry quickly?

I believe I heard that Gordon is getting short on these linings anyway. Does
anyone have a good substitute? It seems that in 40 years something good
might have come along.

Thanks

Gor Souter sells replacement linings. He is using the
material from the Hummer which is designed to operate
in a submerged state. Have not tried them myself but
seems like a logical substitute.

I have Gord's linings on my rear brakes (Originals on front). They
seem to work fine as long as you remember to ride the brakes for a
short time after leaving the water. If you forget and approach a
stoplight soon after, you may have a bit of a scare getting her
stopped in time. <Don't ask how I know this!;)>

They appeared to be a woven type with metal fibres added.

Re: Re: Brake Linings

Marc,

Yes, this is my first Amphi, BUT I've driven at least a half-dozen
cars/trucks into water deep enough to get all 4 brakes wet. It's too bad the
Amphi's don't have disk brakes (at least in the front), they are VERY
superior when wet. :)

Anyway, based on the other drum-brake vehicles I've driven with wet brakes,
I'd say my Amphi suffers about the same amount of loss in braking ability
when it comes out of the water. But, my Amphi's brakes seem to dry more
slowly than the other vehicles I've driven. I am suspicious that the woven
material on my Amphi's shoes is holding more water than "normal" brake shoes
do.

Since I understand that Amphi's were made with "special" brake linings, I
thought that it was possible they found a lining that suffered less braking
loss from water than normal brakes. Unfortunately, it's beginning to sound
like there are no magic brake linings out there. :(

Roger,
Tell us a little more about what you mean by "poor braking performance for
quite a while after swimming". Your email said that your Amphicar was
"brand-new to you"...so I don't know if you've driven an Amphicar before, so
excuse me if you have. I don't mean to question you, only help out if
you're a new owner.
You may be experiencing typical brake action after swimming. I am far from
an expert having only driven my own car, but I have poor braking for a
couple of miles after swimming. Usually after a swim, it seems like we head
out to the road pretty quickly after exiting the water....and usually there
is a stop sign or two right away. The poor braking still catches me off
guard. Once on the road, I always forget again until I see the yellow light
on its way to turning red!
In any case....maybe some others can tell us if I'm wrong and my brakes are
not typical, but get some more input before you go to getting new linings
that may perform about the same.

Good Luck,
Marc Schlemmer.
