Big Engine Installation

Hi Joe,

The alternator that I use is a stock Lucas unit that was used on
later Triumph Spitfires. There are 3 reasons that I use it. First,
because correct mounts are available for it since those Triumphs used
the same block. Second, It uses a two wire system that works the
idiot light on the dash. Finally, if you get the right one, it
actually uses the same size spade terminals so that the original
Amphicar wires simply plug right in. Note: Both of my cars have been
switched to negative ground operation. The switch is rather simple to
do and it eliminates the regulator box since the regulator is built
right into those alternators. I buy the alternators rebuilt from
Kragen Auto parts. The cost me about $110 about 3 years ago. You can
probably find the mounting parts, fan and pulley at the junk yard but
Victoria British also sells most of those items brand new.

Hello Again,

The aluminum housing in the lower left corner of the photo is an
Italian made, aluminum coolant recovery bottle. I've used other
plastic ones but this one looks really nice. Mounting these extra
goodies can be a bit tricky since I never put any additional holes
through the Amphicar hull and make up mounts that can use existing
holes. Most of the time, it's not hard but sometimes it can be a bit
challanging.

In the lower right hand corner you can just see an additional fuel
filter that I installed. The original one is still up front but this
one is just a bit of additional protection and it lets me know that
gas is in the line.

Both my cars use Pertronix ignition modules. They work perfectly and
are a simple addition that does away with points and adds nothing
except an additional wire that goes to the positive side of the coil
primary. They also eliminate side force to the distributor shaft so
you never have to worry about that anymore.
