Best way to tie down your Amphicar to a trailer?

Last April, I towed my Amphi (for the first time) to Mt. Dora, Florida
for the festivies, and struggled to loop straps over the axles and ball
joints while watching not to damage anything, and when I got us there,
even got some lessons from Gord on the proper placement, so as not to
pinch the brake lines in the rear or seperate the ball joints in the
front, but boy, was that still a nuisance. I saw people just looping
the straps though the slots in the wheel rims, which seems a whole lot
easier, and that appears to be secure as well. So, how do you tie down
your Amphi, and why? Is using the rim procedure safe? Let me know your
thoughts. Thanks.

Ariel,

I have tried several ways of strapping down an Amphi on a trailer, and
the very best and most secure way is to use those over-the-wheel style
straps. With those, the Amphi rides along quite happily and freely on
its own suspension. Other methods always risk some damage to the Amphi,
or at best broken straps. Also, those over-the-wheel straps are just so
damned quick and easy to set up and release, compared to the other
methods, that I honestly don't think there's any grounds for a real
debate about what's best to use.

Ariel,

See the May/June 2006 Newsletter for an article I wrote on this very
subjuct. The rim method is safe. The best (safe and most secure)
method is the over the tire web straps.
