Did the Amphicar originally come with a battery box? Did it look similar to the one that Gordon Imports has on sale this weekend?
Thanks,
Ted

I have a NOS battery box and it is metal. Gord Souter sells an exact reproduction of these. You can’t tell the difference from the factory one to Gord’s.

As far as I know Hugh Gordon,s only sell replacement Marine type battery boxes.(like in todays boats, plastic)

I have reproduced the exact steel battery box that was in Amphicars.
there is 3 parts to the battery holding system.
1. is the bottom with arms, that is welded to the floor of the side in engine area.
2. is the box it self. the battery is smaller than the marine batterys of today, 24m but delco makes one that fits right in with post aval for neg or pos. ground.
3. is the hold down on top of battery, again I have an exact copy of original

putting this system in your car makes the difference between a open hood that makes people say wow and one that is just... you know...

I will be bringing a few to Celina,I will be staying at the motel across from the Eagles.I can sell as 3 part kit or indvidual

Could someone post a picture of what the original metal battery boxes are supposed to look like? Do they have a lid?
Thanks,
Ted

I think (but could be wrong) that in some states a metal battery box will not pass a safety inspection. Someone mentioned it the last time we had a battery box discussion..

Hi Ted,

Here are some photos showing the original battery box. Hugh told me that very late Amphicars had the plastic box from the factory.

That must be one spotless Amphicar that you have!

Hopefully attached is a foto of John and his spotless car at Lake Ozark------

Yes---- it is spotless and you can see why

I also have movies of Wavy Dave trying to turn off a megaphone, but thats another story :002::012::005:

Does anyone have a picture of the red and white plastic battery box that was installed in the Amphicar starting in late 1965? Were they white with a red top or red with a white top?
Thanks again,
Ted

Shellee at Gordon Imports told me that original plastic battery box was red with a white top. Surely somebody has a picture and dimensions of the "original" plastic box! Would appreciate the info.
Thanks,
Ted

John,
Is the battery box tray(and straps) supposed to be black or the same color as the car? Other than your pictures, every tray that I have seen is rusted so bad that ther is no discernable paint color!
Thanks again,
Ted Matthews

The original battery boxes were never plastic as far as I know, they were all steel. The tray and straps were the color of the car the metal box itself was black.
