Aquada

I was at the press conference and official launch in London today. There is
some very clever technology in the vehicle and it is road and water legal
which is quite an achievement.

On the road although faster and more modern than an Amphicar it is perhaps
not as practical as Amphicar - no doors, window or top. On the water it is
fast but it does take a lot of power (175BHP V6) and you can hear those
horses have to work hard to keep it going at top speed.

Price is a little high - first 100 cars will be sold for US$ 230K

It's three seats with steering in the centre (like the Alligator - an early
prototype Amphicar) so can be sold anywhere in the world without
modification.

Look out for a CNN feature later today (US time) comparing Aquada and
Amphicar - I've just got off the phone from them - also Fox news will be
running a feature.

There is a link from the front page of www.amphicars.com to the Aquada site.

David,
It looks like it will be another of those weird prototype cars where
about 6 of them get built. It's hard to call it a car since it
doesn't have a top, windows or doors. Perhaps a few of them might
sell in California, where it hardly ever rains, but it can't be
anything but a pure novelty gizmo anywhere else. I would think that's
especially true in England.

Did anybody else here that Richard Branson (Virgin airlines owner and
Balloon guy) was going to drive an Aquada across the English Channel
a throwback to when the amphicar did it.

I think we should send him an email and have him race an amphicar
across.

And with the weather the Amphicars did it in too. Wasn't there 15 foot
seas at the time?

One of my freinds in England was invited to this thought you might
be intrest in reading

Two thirds of the planet we inhabit is water. So how very fortunate
and indeed timely then, that the world's first commercial vehicle
which can actually travel on land and on water has now been launched.

To celebrate Virgin Atlantic's twentieth birthday, and as a valued
member of flying club gold, we would like to invite you to sail with
us in a flotilla of boats alongside Richard Branson, cheering him on
as he attempts to drive the Aquada car from Dover to Calais. This
further feat of derring- do should hopefully see him go straight
into the Guinness Book Of Records by becoming the fastest person to
cross the Channel at the helm of an amphibious vehicle.

Weather permitting, this adventurous record attempt will take place
early in the morning on Monday 14 June. To be a part of history send
an email to virginatlanticchannelchallenge@flyingclubevents.com
telling us if you would like to attend, confirming your membership
number and a contact number. This invitation is purely on a first
come, first served basis and you must be over 18 and have a valid
passport to participate. There is no dress code, although for such
an auspicious occasion, a suit might be appropriate- the wet
variety, naturally.

After the crossing, you will then join us for a celebratory lunch at
a wonderful Chateau in France before boarding a ferry home in the
afternoon. That is unless, you're particularly nice to our heroic
Chairman and he lends you the keys to his car.

Emails must be received by Tuesday 01 June 2004.

We will respond to all successful applicants by email, with further
details
of this exciting day.

Terms & Conditions apply.

Perhaps we should send him a picture of an Amphicar.
