Anyone know if Gordons has any of these tools or could have some made

Mike, You may be referring to tool # AC12 "Assembly tool for oscillating
axle"that is used with # AC22-2 "washer and hexagon nut."
OK this is what I have done. Once I asked if I could just put a bolt in the
end of the axle and pull it out a bit with a claw hammer, unanimously the
answer was no so I did not try that. The day before I left for Celina I
decided to adjust the clutch that meant pull the drive shafts and
transmission. I removed the pinch bolts did the adjustments and I needed to
get it back together this is what happened. I removed one of the grease
fittings and went to the hardware store. The bolt size is 8 mm x 3 "long, get
a flat washer, a fender washer and a 8 mm nut. Back at the car reinstall the
drive shaft and place the oscillating arm onto the end of the axle, it won't
go on all the way because of the spring in the drive shaft. Now screw the 8
mm nut to the top of the bolt put the two washers on and screw the bolt into
the end of the axle finger tip tight tell it stops only finger tip tight. Now
for the fun part take a wrench and begin to run the nut down the bolt and you
will see the arm slide onto the axle. Now I placed the pinch bolt into the
arm continued to tighten the 8 mm nut until it fell into place. This will
work, maybe it took someone foolhardy enough to risk there axle to try it,
what can I say. This was so easy I had to get up and do a little Amphi dance.

PS: Can anyone confirm the original rear wheel bearing numbers. I know the
smaller one is 6206 is the double larger one 3206.

If anyone out there does have this tool or any others that are specific
would you be interested in haveing a machine shop make up a set for a
group order? Maybe Huge will beat us to it if we make enough noise. :)
Anyone know if Gordons has any of these tools or could have some made
up? I'd love to get my hands on a full set as referenced in the
maintaince manual.

Mike,
When I changed the drive shafts, I simply removed the few bolts that
were holding the solid axle in place and slid the
whole assembly out.
This way, you don't disturb the adjustment of the
axle or arm. When
doing so, it's probably a good idea to replace that
paper gasket, but
that's a cheap item. I'm not sure why you guys want
to fool with that
arm and pinch bolt if you don't have to.
I don't believe Hugh has many or any of those special
old tools. When
I was putting the new drive shafts back into the
bearing assemblies, I
called down there looking for some special puller tool. I
know one
can be made up rather easily but I thought it would be
nice to have
the original tool. Scot told me they simply put the
bearing assembly
in a vise and tap the drive shaft into it by hammering on
the drive
shaft yoke with a wood block in between the yoke and the
hammer. I
was surprised that such a low tech procedure is what they
did at
Hugh's place but when I tried it, the shaft dropped into
place very
easily. I guess you shouldn't complicate things more than
necessary.

I will end up taking the solid axle out again but wanted to try and leave it
in just this once. The better way to get your drive shaft into the arm is
to pull it in rather then tap on the yoke from behind. This way your not
taking chances with those bearings.

Mike,
You don't hammer on, or through the bearing. You hammer (through a
block of wood) onto the yoke of the outer drive shaft. You just lean
the shaft over to one side and tap away. It was amazingly easy.

I know John, I guess I used a bad choice of wording. I only ment in theory
your better off pulling than hammering or tapping. From behind you cannot
get a perfect even push thus no matter what or how you do it you are guiding
with the bearings to some extent.
