Amphicar Jack

Holland

I have a 1966 Amphicar. Under the gas tank there is a square tube welded to the floor. It is the same size as the square jack tubes on the outside. The arm of the Bilstien jack fits in perfectly. Is that the correct place to store the jack, or what is the square tube for?

Also, the Bilstien jack is not long enough to raise the car. It appears to be the original jack. Any suggestions.

Thanks, Dave Wind

That's where the jack is stored. Here's a picture that CapnJohn sent me recently. My jack is just over 22 inches tall and lifts the Amphicar. Similar jacks of different heights were used on other model cars of the time.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone used one of those airbag lifts they sell for Nash Metropolitans? The Met has the same mid-body jack point and is very similar for jacking. This is an airbag that lifts the entire side of the car. You plug the bag's hose into the tail pipe and fill the bag with the motor running and exhaust fumes. I saw one once at a Unique Little Car Show in Long Beach and it works pretty good but takes a while to fill with a 4-cylinder. Just a thought although the Amphi pipe is a big larger than the Met's. They sell them through the Met Pit Stop last I saw. - azpaul

The theory of those is the weight is spread evenly but in Amphicar the one I
tried tended to push on the floor either side of the frame rails and bend
it.

Another reason I don't like them is safety issues - mechanical jacks
normally give some warning but when those fail it's like a ballon popping
and the car is on the ground within a second - no jump out of the way time.

Best tip for jacking is mark with white paint the 6 Amphicar jacking points,
these are directly under the frame rails, 3 each side, front back and
centre. The centre (about level with the door handle) is the balance point
that allows you to lift one side of the car.

Interesting. My jack is stored in clamps mounted to the back side of the
12-49-12 Trunk Insert, against the front of fuel tank, Although that square
tube is in there.

Larry,

Both of my cars have the storage on the back of that trunk board and one of them has the pipe welded to the floor too. I use the floor mount in the car that has it and the trunk board in the one without the pipe. I asked Hugh about this once and I think he said the mount on the back of the board was frowned on because in a front end crash the jack would get pushed into the gas tank. Strange though since my very late car is the one without the floor mounting pipe.
