Well Craig, I'm not living in ALASKA like you are, but we also get snow and
freezing weather here in suburban Virginia, near Washington, D.C., and I've
managed just fine without a garage for getting on 7 or 8 years.

Then again, the difference between Virginia and Alaska is a matter of
"degree" (pun regrettably intended), isn't it? After all, no matter how
unseasonably frigid it may get here, I'm never really likely to instantly
turn into a big hairy Irish popsicle if I forget my jacket if I go out to
get the pack of smokes I left on the dash, am I?

Still, with that said, you might find the tips on my old "Amphicar
Winterization" page at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/8389/winterization.html
useful...particularly the tip about the antifreeze in the nooks and
crannies.

I think there is something in the archives about this, search for
winterization.

I have a heated garage here, but that's really just to try and reduce
humidity which is the real killer, if you can keep it below 50% thats great
but with the UK climate I struggle to get it below 75% - a dehumidifier is
most important, the best solution is the carcoon, this has been available in
the UK for many years and works really well, it's now being sold in the US,
www.carcoon.com as they say the key is airflow and reduced humidity - best
the best solution is to drive Amphicar.

They are great in the snow, if it's really deep it just slides over the
drifts on it's flat belly !

I'm certain that our beloved Bilgemaster will suggest that you search
the archoives on this.

I'd suggest winterization or storage.

The bilgemaster wrote a wonderful piece on what he does. It included
putting antifreeze into the bilge.

I have store mine without the antifreeze in the bilge the last few
year in an unheated garage. I realize that our winter in Chicago
aren't that bad compared to in Alaska.

I'd also note that if you actually drive the car on land with the
bilge plug out there is minimal if any water left in there. Most
flows out the bilge hole as you drive and the engine heat evaporates
the rest. Dave the Wave and I generally have at least a 30 minute
drive from the river back to home base. This doesn't work for those
who trailer or live extremely close to the water.

I've been told if I want to keep an Amphi in good shape I really need
a heated garage. Can I get away with out one? I'm concerned about

You might to try a plastic bubble to store it. I have one for my Jag
and it keeps it dry and clean. A small fan inflates it and helps dry
out the inside.

You can find them at www.carcoon.com or www.carcapsule.com
