Amphi Wheels

I had read some comments about using the original Amphi wheel rims with radial,
tubeless tires. There was one comment that the original Amphi rim was intended
for use with an inner tube, and didn't have a "safety bead" on the rim like rims
intended for tubeless tires.

Is anyone using radial, tubeless tires with the original rims? Assuming the
"safety bead" comment is right, is it safe to use a radial tire only if you also
use an inner tube? Or is the "safety bead" for the retention of the tire on the
rim, and, if you want to go to radials, should you replace the rims?

Ed,

I used to sell tires, so you can bet I know what I am taliking about
here. You can go with the radials on the Amphi rims, but you MUST use
tubes. The safety bead will keep the tire from separating from the
rim in a hard turn (or an evasive action which I had to do Saturday,
WHEW!). If the tire seperates from the rim, you loose pressure and
the tire goes flat instantly, rim digs into the pavement and then it
gets bad. Tubes prevent this. Get some radial type tubes, and put
your radial tires on.

--> NEVER <-- GO TUBELESS IN A TUBE TYPE RIM.

John:

Thanks for the authoritative answer. I was just about the ask you a few
follow-up questions, but I decided to do a search of rim safety beads first. I
found a site at:

http://www.diamondracingwheels.com/DIAMONDRacingWheels/TermsSafetyBeads.htm

that explains everything, and even shows a rim cross-section so that we can see
just what a safety bead looks like on a rim.
