This time it was at a local car show / vintage race in Elkhart Lake,
Wisconsin. Maybe you have heard about Road America and the track
that is there? Well, seems they had their 50th anniversary last
Saturday and featured an old race car weekend which featured million
dollar Bugatti race cars and everything else that is fast and
illegal to drive on the street from the 20s to the 50s.
They came into town to re-create the old days where they actually
raced around the roads around the lake and parked for all to see the
wonderful loud racecars. Many drivers sported goggles and leather
caps with scarfs in the wind..you get the picture.
So I had to drive Amphi there to see what all the fuss was about
(there is a lake there too) and parked up the street from the rows
of vintage racers. After getting my fill of them on the move, we
walked back through the "car show" where the croed was thinning and
found a crowd gathered around - you guessed it - the Amphicar. They
were taking pictures and laying on the ground and as I was wearing a
GI Amphi shirt, they started with the questions. None of the other
cars had any admirers. In my mind, we stole the show.
I wanted to go to the track to lay down some bets to the lake and
back, but we left them to go round and round.
A really good day, and a good drive to a fun event at a historic car
guy place with a lake.
