Amphi-Friendly Waterways

Hi-

I bet we could put together an "Amphicar-Friendly Waterways" booklet. We
could do it as a color pdf file so there would be no publishing costs, just
time and effort. I image it would contain pictures of the lake or other
waterway, a description of its better features, a map, and any other
information gleaned from the web or Amphi owners. What we would need is the
name of the waterway, a geographical location, a picture of an Amphicar on
or near it, a URL (if available), and an Amphi sponsor to answer any
questions that arise in putting together the document. The idea came to me
after Amphipoda gave me a "Recreation Lakes of California" book (Thanks, so
much, John). So, just for fun, send me the name (off digest at
sdreich@pacbell.net) and location of a waterway with a picture of an
Amphicar (unencumbered with copyright issues) and any other information you
have on the facilities and features and location of launch ramps. I'm sure
we all have our favorite swimming holes. Let's see if there is sufficient
interest to actually pull this off.

I've often thought that a state-by-state, province-by-province "Favorite
Amphicar Waterways" type guide would be a wonderful idea. For example,
almost noone's ever heard of the Occoquan River in Virginia, not far from
Washington, D.C., but nevertheless it's one of my favorite Amphicar day
retreats. Being parkland along most of its length, it's so pristine and
undeveloped that you can burble around some of its bends and imagine you're
Henry Hudson or maybe some motorized Lewis and Clark. Also, since it limits
watercraft to 10 horsepower (please see
http://www.amphicar.com/members/amphicar_horsepower.htm for something useful
for this common issue), you won't have any wailing jetskis squelching that
illusion. And if you're looking for a place in the Adirondacks of upstate
New York to just kick back in a cabin on a lake for a week that'll only set
you back about $400 with a real nice beach perfect for young children that
you can also launch off of into a full day's worth of Amphicar cruising
along the length of TWO fine lakes, then there's Seaman's Cabins on Long
Lake (see http://www.adirondackacres.com/cabins.htm ).

So anyhow, I'm definitely keen on the idea, and you can count on me to lob
whatever you come up with onto the Club's website. I could also rig up a
form type thing on the Club website for folks to make suggestions directly
to you if you'd like.

I, too, thought this would be a neat project. Others who are inclined
to participate may find the following resource useful. It's called
TerraServer and lets you find and save aerial photos of practically
any place in the U.S. I've placed a sample view in the "photos"
section of amphicar-lovers called "Aerial view of Celina". It's at 32
meters resolution, but the tool lets you get to 4 meters and maybe
even closer. Use the 'download' feature to save pictures.

There's no doubt that finding new "Amphi-friendly" waterways can be a real
challenge in some parts of California. With this is mind, "El Cajon" and
his cohorts around San Diego have quietly been cobbling together a real
model for a regional Amphicar Owners Guidebook that's now hosted on
Amphicar.net.

Here's your essential guide for pretty much everything soup-to-nuts that the
Southern California Amphicar Owner might want to know, from the lowdown on
all sorts of service vendors to available waterways to the local crew of
web-toed motoring characters. It's an impressive and helpful source of
info, and you'll find it at www.amphicar.net by clicking that California

The Reference is obviously focused on Southern California. I tried to limit the
information in it to only things specific to SoCal, like launch sites and
vendors; anything of interest to ALL amphibians should be posted to the Yahoo
group & any general parts tips should go onto the club cross-reference.

OTOH, if anyone would like to start a similar Reference for their local area,
you could use the outline of this document as a good starting point. Just load
the tables and replace the pixs with your local info. Everything was created in
MS Word 97. So, if anyone wants a copy of the doc, just email me and I'll send
you a copy.
