Mike: I've had the Aldan's on front & rear since Hugh
first offered them in '95 or so. Mostly I've been
quite pleased, but recently have gone through a
suspension noise investigation: banging into dips and
over bumps. The shocks felt OK, but having exhausted
all other alternatives I finally determined they were
the suspects and sent them back to Aldan. Their
lifetime warranty is a good deal, only the outbound
freight cost. They'll rebuild them or replace them as
they see fit. The shocks came back rebuilt w/ a note
stating: "Low on nitrogen gas. Inspected and rebuilt.
Replaced seal, o-ring, fluid coil, silicone plug."
I've some squeeky bushings now, but the "banging" is
gone. Aldan will take the shocks w/ or w/o the
springs installed, depending how much work you want to
do -vs- how much outbound freight you want to spend (a
pair w/ springs is about $17.00 from here to Aldan - I
used USPS Priority Mail).

Possible downside: I had sent one shock in about three
years ago, so if it was fixed properly then, it didn't
last too long.

They moved about two years ago, if you need the
address:

Aldan Shock Absorber Company
22015 S. Avalon Blvd
Carson, CA 90745
(310) 834-7478

Doing maintenance for the CA, TX, FL trip beginning in
January. Only four months until Mt Dora!

Larry:
That is great info on Aldan. I'm going to play around with the adjustment
which I haven't done yet. Gordons mention the knob on top for adjustment
however my instructions and the shocks have two adjustments for each shock.
On top there is the knob on the bottom a small inset screw which is also
used to adjust them. I asked Hugh about this second adjusting point and he
didn't seem to remember one shock from the other. Maybe the later Aldans
only have the one knob.

Thanks
Mike

Mine (fronts & rears) only have one knob, on the
bottom. There is a screw, but I think it is a port
seal or set screw. I don't think you'll find much (if
any) difference between setting 1 & 6 as Amphi's don't
really weigh enough.

Re: Re: Aldan Shocks

Larry, the instructions with mine said adjust both the knob and set screw.
My originals seemed to operate fine but with my recent "wheel" problems I
changed them along with checking everything. My set of Aldans bounce much
easier. Does anyone remember when Hugh had Koni's? Those were PERFECT.

Mike, The paperwork that came w/ my rears said
"Double Adjustable", part #758, but all references to
"Double" and "upper adjust" were inked out by hand
with "Single" written in. The only have a knob only
on the bottom. The screw at the top has no
locator/adjuster numbers.

Perhaps Hugh sent different shocks to different people
as he determined which were best?

No yours sound like mine. The instruction were not altered so most likely
you just passed some good info along. I'll try the knob only. Were yours
early bolt on the top shocks. Mike

Re: Re: Aldan Shocks

Thanks, Mike. Note that the "double" instructions for
the rear shocks show the part number as #758. When I
received the shocks back from repair, Aldan had
identified them as AS 858FT/12mm. I would think the
12mm identifies the sleeve in the bushing for the
mounting bolt.

No my fronts are bayonet/thru-hull upper mount.

The problem with the "clunk" in the late front shocks is due to
rebound forces, not compression.

For example, say the Amphicar hits a pot hole, road dip or whatever.
The front dives down against the spring (compression), then it bounces
back upwards (rebound). If the spring is adjusted too tightly, the
shock will top out . . . thus the clunk.

John Friese is exactly correct. Adjust the bottom retainer just a few
thousandths above the hand firmness adjuster. If it still clunks,
call us. Most likely your stub axle and front swing arms are slightly
loose.
