The Parable of the Blind Men and the Amphicar
It was six men of Celina
To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Amphicar
(Though all of them were blind),
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind.
The First approached the Amphicar,
And happening to fall
Against its broad and sturdy door,
At once began to bawl:
`God bless me! but the Amphicar
Is very like a wall!'
The Second, feeling of the headlamp,
Cried, `Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth?
To me 'tis mighty clear
This wonder of an Amphicar
Is very like a jug of beer!'
The Third approached the Amphicar,
And happening to take
The steering wheel within his hands,
Thus boldly pronounced the scoop:
`I see,' quoth he, `the Amphicar
Is very like a hoop.'
The Fourth reached out his eager hand,
And felt about the fins.
`What most this wondrous beast is like
Is mighty plain,' quoth he in a lark;
`'Tis clear enough the Amphicar
Is very like a shark!'
The Fifth who chanced to touch a propeller,
Said: `E'en the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most:
Deny the fact who can,
This marvel of an Amphicar
Is very like a fan!'
The Sixth no sooner had begun
About the Amphicar to grope,
Than, seizing upon the bilging spout
That felt moist to touch,
`I see,' quoth he, `the Amphicar
Is like a fountain so very much!'
And so these men of Celina
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
And all were in the wrong!
So, oft in theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween,
Rail on in utter ignorance
Of what each other mean,
And prate about an Amphicar
Not one of them has seen!
