3rd Gear Clunk

Ever since Celina I have a odd noise coming from the land transmission
when climbing a small grade. All seems to shift ok, just a clunk on
occasion. Any ideas as to what it may be?

>"clunk" If You can feel a light pulsation with hand on shifter it
could be that a tooth or teeth have been nicked/chipped.You should
drain trans and inspect for metal shavings or bits. Probably should
get a magnet too. You better hope You did not nick input shaft. I
think Hugh is around a 1000 for that part! If only the gear, that is
available for much less. Check rear hub for tightness too. Just bring
car to Ozarks then on way home You can drop it off. Later Dave the Wave

It goes "Clunk", when under higher than normal torque, you say? (Like
powering up a hill)

Well, sure, it well might be tranny-related, but it could also just be
something's a little worn out in the rear axle or suspension assemblies
or thereabouts, such as a loose or worn keyway or (less likely)
retaining key (as in "woodruff key") on the wheel axle, or maybe just an
"ovaled out" swing arm getting sloppy with the little stub axle. Or, it
could possibly also be a drive shaft on the way out. Any of these
things might cause a "clunk" or a deeper "thunk" or "thlunk" noise that
you almost "feel" more than hear under certain conditions. Does the
sound seem to come from one side or the other?

Bilgey is right to determine source of noises not just to assume. So
after a long phone call with Ron, he did say that third gear was
"ground" multiple times at Celina. And he does have a pulsation in
shifter, and it has gotten worse. But when having some odd issues or
noises the hub keyway is many times forgotten-at great expense to owner.
Roger Sallee called day before thinking his new clutch was acting up.
Instead it was the keyway. Bilgey catch a ride with Mike!!! P.S. Jimmy

Thanks Dave & Bilgey. Couldn't seem to locate the exact location of the
clunk, definitely not a universal, etc. Took it out for a drive
yesterday and it is getting worse so I drained the land transmission
and there were metal shaving in the oil. Plan on pulling tranny and
sending for a rebuild this winter.

<table>This is not the source of the third gear clunk in this instance, but another thing that can make a sound under torque is if the driver's side transmission mount comes free and that side of the transmission and engine rise up enough to let the fan blade hit the shroud. That happened to me and I kept hearing the fan blade hit when the rear wheels hit the ramp when leaving the water. I put new trans mounts in a week back but there sure isn't much to keep that rubber from pulling out of the metal part. Glad Inow haveGord Souter's longer double threaded transmission mount bolts to keep that from happening again.
