You would get better exposure if this were in the correct listings under events instead of general discussions.

Not necessarily !
Those "amphibious event" postings don't work for all of us who use email.
They get stuck in a spam filter as they don't include the word Amphicar and
even if you do find them the content isn't there unless you have the time to
log in - which is not something I do.
The only stuff I ever read is the "general discussion" which works in a
similar way to the Yahoo Groups emails on other subjects that I am a member
of.
I know some people have time to do the web based forum thing but unless
stuff lands in my email I'm unlikely to see it and I think many other
Amphicar people are the same.

I totally agree with David. Basically, I only subscribe to the general discussions. So a quick announcement here might get my attention to followup some other place. But just an announcement in something I don't read won't get my attention.

Maybe I'm just hardening in my old-fashioned ways, but I'm not happy with
the changed Amphicar forum. True, it offers many features that we didn't
have before, and it provides for subgroups to specialize the discussion
topics. Yet for me, I never missed having those features, and the subgroups
have "Balkanized" the general forum.

I used to read every email posting, but now I follow only the general forum.
And I really miss seeing the return email address of the poster; unless the
poster decently identifies himself, you don't know who you are talking to.
Plus, it makes it impossible to reply to the poster off-list.

I am certainly open to consolidating some of the forums if that would be helpful.
Problem is, no matter what route taken, someone will find something to bit** or complain about.* In Yahoogroups I was always getting complaints about:
- the ads in every message
- people posting ads for trailers, services, etc.* to the entire group
- the fact that archive searching was extremely cumbersome
- the fact that emails adresses were being included and could thus be easily harvested by spammers.
Ah well, damned if you do, damned if you don't!

All valid points, so I don't condemn your efforts at all. It's just that
now, I'm not as happy with the interface as I was before. If my gripe isn't
echoed by many others, then it simply remains my gripe and not worth
addressing. True, you can't please all of the people all of the time; maybe
shooting for that magic 80/80 is the best we can hope to do at anything.

I actually really like the new forum setup. The old yahoo groups worked okay, but were pretty broken in some ways. The search is so much better here, and I suspect the how-to section is going to be a great resource once we get it populated a bit more.

I find the easiest way to keep track of whats going on is to click on the "unread posts" link in the top right. That way I don't miss anything, and I don't have to thumb through every subforum to see what's going on.

I like the fact that I get emails when a new ad is placed, however I miss the digest format I get fo all the Yahoo Groups I am in. Maybe I've missed the availability of a digest on the new site? Other than those points I haven't really been affected by the change.

I do appreciate anyone who takes the time to moderate a site, I do one for antique fire trucks on Yahoo so I know what it takes:) Thanks Mike!

If you go to User CP -> Edit Forum Subscriptions, you can set it to email you a daily or weekly list of all new posts.

No criticism of you Mike, I seem to remember you put it to a vote and it is your group (nothing to do with the Amphicar club) so you can do what you like !

If a Yahoo group gets really popular (over a few thousand members) then the volume of messages becomes a bit of a pain but otherwise the filters in Outlook make it easy for me to put all of the Amphicar messages in a folder and then using Outlook search or Google Desktop search to quickly and easily find anything I want.

You would have lost me if the group had become forum only - too much hassle - but by enabling email I can maintain most of the features of Yahoo groups in a way that works for me. It also fits in well with an increasing number of direct emails I get from Amphicar people around the world that I keep in the same searchable folder.

Hello All,

What a great segment on Good Morning America today. I bet the Boston Swim In got over 8-10 minutes of total time on ABC... Ron Green was great in his interview with Sam Champion and Ron Trudeau was spraying every one with water and seeing all those Amphi's there made me really want to be with everyone sharing laughs and fun...

Ron & Gord, You better watch out because I am going to buy a water canon for the next time I see you!:005:

One question - the presenter called the engine an engine rather than the normal American word of motor. Why was that ? He didn't sound English or Canadian. In the past Americans haven't understood when I've used the e word.

Re the Boston Swim In

Thank you for the web address David. Ron had told me about it and NO, I was
not out of the Good Morning America viewing area. It was just that we had
Tropical Storm FAY that is still dumping water on us ( 9 inches yesterday ) and
so yesterday when it was broadcast, our cable TV went out. I tried to find
it on Good Morning America's website with no success. A friend even called me
and told me that it was on right then, but I could not get the "telly" to
work ! We have had about 3 inches so far today, but I think it is tapering
off and will end today or tomorrow. Our lake levels have been so low due to a
drought situation now for the last 3 or 4 years that we badly needed the rain.

I had wanted to see the Boston Swim In on Good Monring America and due to
circumstances, missed out, so now I got to see it and it was very nice.

Incidentally, I am presuming that you, David, get the SPEED CHANNEL on the
"telly." You have probably already seen the segment on "101 Cars You Must
Drive." At any rate, it is on our Speed Channel tonight - they are running a
"marathon" of the all the episodes aired so far, I believe. The series of 6
episodes or so starts at 8 PM our time, (3 PM your time, of course) and the
Amphicar segment which also features a Hummer and an AMC Pacer theoretically
comes on at 9:30 PM EST. The shows are each half an hour long. A little note
that you and other Amphicar owners will get a kick out of : The host of the
show ( my passenger ) is a big strapping person and after I splash in, you can
see the car listing to Starboard, as he is in the passenger seat. The
assumption is that he is pretty heavy causing the list. The fact is that with the
lake levels down, we are hitting the bottom and the driver's side was running
on the bottom at that time causing the drivers side to ride higher, not that
his weight was causing the passenger side to ride lower ! Trivia which one
would not suspect. That was our first, and in fact, our only trip into the
lake that day, so I had no idea ahead of time that the depth was so shallow
because the last time I was in that same lake, the depth was fine.

Vic Nelson near Daytona

On the subject of Engine vs Motor, I think Americans use the terms
interchangeably pretty much, unlike Hood and Bonnet as we do not use Bonnet nor Petrol
( We use the items but not those words in that context ! )

Thanks Dave for sending this us this link to Good Morning America. Ron, you look & sound soooo professional! I was on my way to the doctor's when this was shown on TV & missed it. BUT our family drove out to Taunton Thurs afternoon for the Swim-In. Sooooo, you sent an update of Good Morning America & I'll just send a short update of the fantastic Swim-In we had at Ron Trudeau, Gerry & Laurie O'Bara's Swim-In at Taunton, Mass. (You will have to wait for the newsletter to read the full report as well as see pictures. I've tried to send this twice with attachments but it wouldn't go through.)

On Fri we drove our Amphicars to a wonderful lake in Cape Cod (about a 40 mile drive one way). On the way we stopped for breakfast at a dinner that was built in 1929 from an old trolley. Saturday's big event was held at a lake about 1/4 mile from Gerry & Laurie's house. We swam the lake to get to Rick & Barbara's house for the party. They were such gracious hosts (and good friends of Gerry & Laurie's) to all 12 or 14 Amphicars (I lost count) with over 40 of us. The kids had a ball tubing, we had a ball 'swimming', eating, & making more wonderful memories together with our Amphicars. We came from Canada, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Michigan & New York. It was so hard to leave on Sun. morning as another lake trip was moving out for the afternoon.

By the way; Don't believe a word that you hear from Laurie that I don't know how to drive fast enough when caravaning. It wasn't my fault that the tractor trailer got in front of me!

Seriously speaking, though, we had such a memorable weekend & I can't wait to do it again next year. Ina (in the Boro).
