Ed:
Since your car was a one owner prior to you getting it we know it was sold
late. If I recall even though it has a painted dash doesn't it have chrome
vent posts and lipped quarters? We heard last year at Celina that you
could get chrome vent posts and lipped quarter panels on early cars but few
if any people had ever seen one. I must admit I was not to quick to believe
this since I'd never seen one.
There are several stange things found from time to time. Some 67's have the
black dash treatment on the top of the doors too. I've seen some late cars
which were factory painted all black inside the engine, trunk and bilge
section regardless of what color the outside was and others which had some
black paint applied only on the battery tray shelf. It would be interesting
to find some original Amphicar company files, memo's etc. which would give
us a better idea of why they did what they did!

the other side of the world who is long out of business. Still, there's
something fascinating about the VIN's (maybe because of the low production
run of only one model). Let me share some text from Mike Eschemann (in
Chicago) about the Amphi I recently bought from him.

serial number would indicate a car built several years before 1967 yet it
was sold in 67 or 68 off the docks in NYC. Some cars are this way since the
vin and title indicate the year of sale rather than the year produced. This
was fairly common at the time i think especially regarding imports.
Remember Amphicar had trouble selling these cars. Yours was probably
shipped here after being a European car which didn't sell. There are other
myths out there which may or may not be true."

car just scream that it's NOT a 67. For instance, no bilge blower, small
bilge drain hole, heater under the gas tank, color matching dash panel (not
black) and the presence of the propeller "shields". If I had to guess, I
would say my car was likely made in 62. Maybe when I get to pulling the
engine, the engine number might also be a clue. It's also possible that the
radio may have some dated inspection stickers inside.

your Amphis so that he can put the data onto the members' VIN page.
