Oh please, ----Dr. Wavvy Dave with a stock head,------- since when???

I would suggest shaving the heads, yours and the engine one, let me know how much you take off to get compression up to 9 to 1 on the engine one---NO fotos of other--ah so, I see

Dave - I strongly reccomend installing both the cam and a carb. FYI,
Cam goes inside, carb on top. They use more fuel that way but run much
better. I am not sure how "stock" your head is, I think it has had
some sort of modification from time to time. ;)

PS - The 1st 1/4 is installed and looks great! Anyone replacing a 1/4
panel should call Dr Dave. Installing them in one piece is the correct
and easiest way to go. Very little massaging was needed. Sure beats
piecing together 2 or more panels that require lots more effort to fit
and is more cost effective too. Saves time which equals $$$$.

Dave,

I just had built up another 1296 engine. I used an Isky street cam
in it, Hastings Chromalloy rings and Harland Sharp roller rocker
arms. I also had the block "decked" to increase the compression a
bit. It only has a few miles on it up to now but it sure sounds
sweet with no noise from the valve train other than a smooth pure
from the roller rockers. Of course, I'm using my high performance
clutch system and a Weber DGV/5A 32/36 carb with an adapter to fit
the original Amphicar air cleaner.

I can also recommend the ArvinMeritor VW0545 muffler. It is built
tough and has a nice sound. Smooth and not very loud.

John, how did you fit the Weber to the 1196, an adapter to existing Amphicar manifold or a different intake and exhaust manifold--thanks-Ken</font>

Thanks John, thats what I thought about the conversions, I even bought a used 1500 engine to get the head but as you know they won't fit onto the 1196, then bought what I was told was a 1296 but it turned out to be an 1147. So I'm back to making a custom setup. </font>

Hello Larry,

A local muffler shop supplied the one I've been using for about 4
years. I liked it so much that, just recently, I had him get another
one for my other Amphicar. Since you're having a problem finding one
on the web I'll try to find other sources for them or I can order one
in for you from my local guy.

Hello,

Pierce mufflers in Gilroy California sells a kit that includes a Pierce
manifold and the Weber carb. The kit has been around for years since it
was designed for the Triumph Spitfires. A company called Canon (or
Cannon) also makes such a manifold but I haven't used their version.

This Weber conversion package won't work on your original 1147 cc engine
because it has a 6 port head. I run a later 1296 cc engine with it's 8
port head.

On the exhause side, I use a cast iron manifold that was used on many of
the Triumph Spitfires.

This engine is a great system that gives the Amphicar more power but
still maintains the short stroke nature of the original engine so that
the engine can run at high revs safely.

You can see photos of one of my cars in the photos section under 1296
engine. This engine has a couple of extra goodies on it that allows the
car to run for long stretches at over 80 MPH.

Remove that old 1300 short block and
replace it with a 1970 BIG block V8 or
was that vice versa? Put the springs
back in your bed mattress and the valves
go in the toilet. And the next time
you prank call my answering machine
I'll dream up some more colorful advice
to help your project along.

Cheers mate! ;)

Dave,
Paul Rasmussen has the 1300 in his car. I don't think
he monitors this list so I'll copy him on this note
and maybe he'll want to chime in with suggestions.

I also have a 1300 in my car. I have twin SU carbs so I had to adapt a new throttle cable, I had to alter the exhaust, Iwent to a larger dia. exh. pipe as the old J pipe would not fit anyway. Everything else went very smoothly

Mike,

You sure can. You can put in a 1500 or the earlier 1296 engines. I
like the 1296 engines because they have the same short stroke of the
1147 engine and can rev fast for high speed road operation. I run
1296 engines in both my Amphicars.

There are some photos in the photos section under "1296 engine". I
have more and better photos of this installation and you can also
call me for more details. No alteration of the original engine
installation is required so you can always switch back if you ever
want to.
