I just found a really nice reference handbook, called "The 12 Volt Boater's
Handbook". This describes lots of electrical topics, aimed toward boaters, but
also applicable to autos in general. The book is written in a very non-technical
style, starting with very basic electricity, and moves on to cover the innards
of starters and alternators. It tells you how to trouble-shoot electrical
systems, and how to use voltmeters and fault lights. Also covers bilge alarms,
lights, switches, horns and accessories.
