Hi everybody,

Hey, are there any Triumph 1147 cc engine experts around central Ohio or close? I live in Columbus.
I have 3 weeks where I can be free to work on my Amphi in December and would like to get the engine
fixed. My car is one that I believe hadn't been run since the early 1970s. My Dad and I worked on it
(had it totally apart) from June through October and finally got it in the water in October. The car made the
100 mile trip from my Dad's house to mine just fine and ran fine on the water the next day. Then as I was
driving it to the restoration shop that did the painting for some additional touch up, the engine started having problems. We towed it to the shop where it has been sitting since October. The guys at the shop said it'll start right up and run just fine for 5 minutes, but that oil is beingpushed out of the breather cap while the lower part is being starved of oil. I was assuming I'd have to pull the engine out again, but would welcome any advice about what in the oil circulation might be clogged and if there's anyway to remedy that without pulling the engine again. I can be reached toll free at 866-487-7211. We did not change the oil in the
engine because it looked like some previous owneralready had. My dad and I planned on driving the car for a week and then changing the oil, but we only had it running two days before this problem developed. Maybe someone had switched from non-detergent to detergent oil which loosened up the dirt and it clogged things up. I don't know enough about that engine to have any ideas. My Dad and I had the engine out (so the body coudl be painted) but we did not have the engine apart because we believed this to be a low mileage engine and it ran just fine. The guys at the shop where my car is do do full restorations of classic cars but mostly work on old Buicks and big old American straight-8s and V8s--theyare not exterts on Triumph engines. Thanks in advance for anyadvice or recommendations?

Hi James, I'm many thousands of miles from Ohio (although I do listen to Dayton Jazz via the Internet ! ).

Oil circulation is very simple in this engine and the pump doesn't have a lot of puff. Most likely is combustion gasses going past the piston rings pressuring the crankcase and pushing the oil out. Could be rings are stuck, broken or bores scored.

Try a compression test and if it shows a cylinder low poor some thick oil in, this will temporary "repair" the piston bore seal and so if compression then returns it all needs to come apart.

One further thing, if the engine was left outside and water went into the carb this will end up in the cylinders, cause the bores to rust and therefore cause this problem.

Hi James - if it's pushing oil out the top, try cleaning the oil
returns inside the engine - if the passages are plugged no oil will
return to the bottom end, or it will return very slowly. Just a
thought!
